Actually, it seems to be working somewhat for longer sounds, e.g. /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg The first time, the sound is played from start to finish. The second time though, it seems to skip the first part of the sound. This is also reproducible in Totem. Sounds like a bug in gstreamer or some gst plugin...
