Workaround in comment 2 also works for me in Ubuntu 12.04. However, I
use a Dell Latitude D620 with an older chip, Intel 3945, so the module
name is iwl_legacy, instead of iwlagn. I have:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/wlan-led.conf
options iwl_legacy led_mode=1
