I have had the same problem since 11.10. The problem occures on two seperate machines (now) running 12.04 and both of them have a screen size of 2560x1440.
I would think that the above metioned iMac runs at a screen size similar. I've posted a quick fix on Ask Ubuntu on how to get around the problem, but this should really be adressed correctly.
