Same behaviour here. Specifically: 12.04 LTS 64-bit When I start Chromium, the icon appears in the launcher, but with no 'flag' (notch thing) to show it is running and it does not appear in the application switcher using Alt+Tab.
Incidentally, I have the same experience with Sunbird when a launcher I had previously created in ~/.local/share/applications was present. Once that launcher was deleted, the icon appeared as normal in the app- switcher.
