I was able to restore the system this way: 1. Booted with a previous kernel (3.0.x) which gave me back a mouse and the terminals 2. Switched to a terminal ALT+CTRL+F1 3. Configured the network card (both wireless and wired cards where unconfigured) 3. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -f
This showed the main problem: it seems package libjpeg8 was not able to get installed during the upgrade process, and so left a lot on unmet dependencies on a bunch of packages. After this the system flushed away the remaining packages pending for installation and after reboot, the system was completely operational. I hope this info helps others. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/990847 Title: Unity broken in Ubuntu 12.04 after upgrade VAIO VGN-SR To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/990847/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
