I was able to restore the system this way:

1. Booted with a previous kernel (3.0.x) which gave me back a mouse and the
terminals
2. Switched to a terminal ALT+CTRL+F1
3. Configured the network card (both wireless and wired cards where
unconfigured)
3. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -f

This showed the main problem: it seems package libjpeg8 was not able to
get installed during the upgrade process, and so left a lot on unmet
dependencies on a bunch of packages.

After this the system flushed away the remaining packages pending for
installation and after reboot, the system was completely operational.

I hope this info helps others.
