By the way:
Setting the layout is possible by calling:

setxkbmap -layout de -variant us


But this layout is *not* the same as the old German (qwerty). de(us) uses the 
US mapping and just adds some additional characters (e.g. umlauts) at the third 
level. 
German (qwerty) used to just switch "y" and "z" on the German keyboard....
