Hi, I had one more idea to try out - burn the iso onto a DVD-R and see what happened.
Turns out that it fails just like the CD-R version. My next idea is to wait for 12.04 to appear on Linux Format's DVD and see if that works! Despite trying every BIOS USB boot option on both USB ports, my generic PC failed to boot from USB. So I'm quite keen to hear what Canonical have to say about the subject.
