sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update did not resolve the issue - however after some more googling and checking on the system I found that the package at fault was nvidia- common.
I went back to 2.6.32-38 using sudo apt-get remove linux- headers-2.6.32-41 , 40, and then 39 to get back to 38 where the problem started. At this point the update errors stopped, and then I uninstalled nvidia- common , restarted, and then reinstalled nvidia-common. The system could then update with errors, staying on 38. This evening I have run update again where it asked to do a partial update which it completed successfully. I am back to running 2.6.32.41.48 according to the Synaptic Package Manager, with no evident problems. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/988058 Title: package linux-headers-2.6.32-39-generic 2.6.32-39.86 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/988058/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
