sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

did not resolve the issue - however after some more googling and
checking on the system I found that the package at fault was nvidia-
common.

I went back to 2.6.32-38 using sudo apt-get remove linux-
headers-2.6.32-41 , 40, and then 39 to get back to 38 where the problem
started.

At this point the update errors stopped, and then I uninstalled nvidia-
common , restarted, and then reinstalled nvidia-common.

The system could then update with errors, staying on 38.

This evening I have run update again where it asked to do a partial
update which it completed successfully.

I am back to running 2.6.32.41.48 according to the Synaptic Package
Manager, with no evident problems.
