I had a look at syslog after a failed 12.04 install. It reads:-

Now I'm only a Python tourist but I figure you should set up your exception
handlers to preserve the name of the file in question so it can be
displayed to the user trying to do the install.
See attached partmon and syslog files for fun :)
BTW: What are the hardware requirements for this install? I've got 512MB
RAM.
