Hi Chris. Thanks for your thorough response and suggestions. Unfortunately the laptop stopped responding so often that I gave up using Ubuntu on my personal laptop and switched to the native OS, after being an avid Ubuntu user since 5.04. I did install 12.04 and still boot to it once in a while, but the performance (CPU usage/heat generation/battery consumption/touchpad functionality) is significantly worse than the native OS X Lion that I have pretty much weened myself away from Ubuntu on that hardware. I hope it's not forgotten about because it worked quite well under 10.04 when I first got the laptop. </rant off> I'll try some of your suggestions at my earliest convenience.
