my theory is that it is related to syndaemon disabling the touchpad, because: 1. touchpad operation can be resumed by synclient and xinput cli tools 2. rmmod psmouse && modprobe psmouse also works, but likely because that reloads the synaptics driver 3. gpm driver continues to work in a console while touchpad is disabled in X 4. people have reporded that removing the "disable touchpad while typing" option from mouse settings is a workaround for this
