There seems to be serious problems with the 295.40 driver in regards to 3d performance at the moment. If you look in the comments here http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers/+bug/982485 you find some info or google around.You may have to wait for nvidia to update before it works again,
