Quick update on this. Still present with 3.4.1-0ubuntu1
However I followed a tip from the bug report linked in #10 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- shell/+bug/964796/comments/4) Switching OFF "Have file manager handle desktop" fixes the issue.
