Here's a weird observation. A few weeks ago the annoying characters disappeared, although I couldn't figure out why. This morning I upgraded linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic from 2.6.20-16.28 to 2.6.20-16.29, and on reboot my hard drives (which were /dev/hda and hdb) changed back to /dev/sda and sdb again. And the annoying characters in hddtemp output have reappeared! Anyone know what is going on?
