I came across the same issue on Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 when I switched to Xfce.
I could toggle the Bluetooth on and off but none of my previously pair
Bluetooth devices/profiles were available.

Work-around:
1. Type the following on a Terminal console
     sudo service bluetooth restart
2. Select Bluetooth icon on Xfce.
3. Verify existing Bluetooth devices/profiles now appear

I am using an external usb Bluetooth adapter.
