So it turns out the monitor didn't have an HDMI input. The only way I could get it working without an HDMI-DVI cable was to downgrade to Xorg 1.11 and install Catalyst. I'm looking forward to the arrival of an HDMI-capable monitor at that station so I can test the open-source driver more thoroughly (get some quite annoying crashes with Catalyst).
