Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg
This is a general bug that effects all version of Ubuntu. When Ubuntu is installed, it will attempt to auto-detect the resolution and driver for the video card present in the system. In my experience, it rarely picks it correctly. A fix for this issue would be to enable the user to select a driver and choose the resolution. This could be implemented with a "advanced" configuration option during install with a warning of possibly setting it up incorrectly. This would be essentially the same as running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but with reduced options (keyboard&mouse and monitor refresh ignored). For the nvidia/ati cards we have the fgrlx and nv options, and several others for the other setups. If a user decides to set it up post-install, they can run this configuration wizard. To ensure that they pick the correct one, when clicking apply, it will "test" the new configuration file by adding a check script to startup temporarily, restarting the xserver, and having a dialogue box appear after login asking if it displays correctly. Giving it a 30 second time-out would make sure that if it doesn't display correctly, it would revert to original configuration file, and restart xserver, upon logging back in, would announce that configuration was bad. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Display not configured with proper resolutions on install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/119458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
