I downloaded "Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Tribe-1" which is based on the
2.6.22-6.13 (2.6.22-rc3-based) kernel (see
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/tribe1), and I can confirm the bug is
solved in this release.

The live CD boots without the need for extra kernel parameters, and
after booting:

1) it shows (almost) 4GB RAM, which is great
2) it does show /dev/sda, which is fantastic

So if things don't get bugfixed in 7.04, 7.10 is going to be the
solution.
