There is some work in progress towards fixing this bug, under the
duplicate report #935778. There is now a kernel that does successfully
allow the brightness to be changed after suspend, albeit with a few
unresolved issues.

I am marking this bug as a duplicate of #935778 to keep everything
together with the (closest) solution.
