I experienced this bug while installing Ubuntu besides Windows Vista. Here's my 
workaround:
Kill Ubiquity (the installer) via terminal when it freezes at "laptop-detect":
$ sudo killall ubiquity
Then restart it:
$ sudo ubiquity
And then choose "Upgrade existing Ubuntu installation". Then the installation 
finishes without any problems.
