I just ran sudo modprobe acer-wmi and that was enough to bring back the repeated disconnections. So was removing acer-wmi from blacklist.conf and rebooting. To make Ubuntu work for these machine /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf could "blacklist acer-wmi" by default.
