The only hardware differences between the two machines as far as I can tell are that the working machine has a 1.4GHz processor and 1.25GB of RAM whereas the non-working one has a 1.7GHz processor (same stepping, both are Pentium M Banias) and 768MB of RAM. Maybe it is some kind of subtle timing issue...
