Hi Toby, Thanks for reporting this problem. The reason for this discrepancy is that for xserver 1.3, the developers focused on display hotplug. Input hotplug is scheduled to be worked on for xserver 1.4. Thus I don't think it is expected that it should be able to detect your touchpad yet, however you are correct this definitely an issue we should track. I'm marking it a wishlist item for now though, and we can check back on it when xserver 1.4 comes out.
