I think Xorg and gdb in general are not the best friends. I have the same trouble as you when I try to debug my savage driver issues, although I have got some backtraces in the past. In http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=423775 with similar troubles one suggestion is to use an older gdb...
If one could get gdb to work, and knew Xorg well, one could also put in some breakpoints to see how far it gets before something goes wrong, but this is not easy.
