Tried to install from the i386 live-CD today, and it seems to work flawlessly! The splash screen works perfectly, no hangups, and I can even log out, thus using the fglrx driver. So it's pretty obvious it has something to do with the amd64 version. Worth a note is that it didn't work for me in edgy either, thus using the i386 version.
