I think this was a case of self-inflicted damage. I had a look with strace and didn't see mention of sni-qt being loaded; so I had a look at the plugin shipped in sni-qt... and found that it wasn't there. I vaguely remember at one point doing some manual file shuffling under /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4 to make enough space for an upgrade to finish up, and apparently missed restoring the sni-qt files. (I've since moved /usr to a bigger partition.)
So once I did an apt-get install --reinstall sni-qt:i386, the indicator started to show up again. Sorry for wasting your time. :/ ** Changed in: sni-qt (Ubuntu Precise) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/915801 Title: sni-qt seems to no longer let skype show up as an indicator in precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sni-qt/+bug/915801/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
