I too used the Ubuntu 10.04+ 64bit debian download from skype's website, dpkg says 2.2.0.35-1.
I installed a second machine this weekend (Saturday the 10th) and update/upgraded which inhibited the same problem. Although on that machine Unity came up as Unity 2D on initial boot / login, and i didn't have the same gconf information in order to do the work around / hack. Bother machines were installed using 64bit ISOs. I have a third machine to test w/ but was going to wait if/when Skype shows up in the USC to install from there. Given some reports of it working and not working, what might be different in the setups? I will do an apt-get update / upgrade today and report back.
