@John: My kernel is from git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-precise.git. Since version 18.28 (I now have 18.29) network doesn't work with AppArmor enabled. As a workaround I can disable it with apparmor=0 in the kernel cmdline.
