Yes, the laptop is running the latest 1.11 version of the BIOS. [1]

The BIOS is VERY unreliable though (settings for integrated peripherals being 
ignored, temperature reported by coretemp was 20 degrees higher than what it 
really was until the machine was put into S3 and back - this was "fixed" by 
reloading BIOS defaults). In short, I would have more confidence in 
repeatability of this issue if anyone with the same laptop is observing the 
same behaviour.
I'll try reloading defaults, maybe rolling back to 1.10 and see what happens.
