Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When the screensaver activates it takes something like 5-10 seconds for
the screen to fade to black. This has always happened for me on dapper,
on various different machines.

Nothing needs to be done, as far as I can tell, just that the
screensaver is enabled and set to switch on after a certain amount of
activity.

I'm using the nvidia-glx binary blob with my GeForce FX 5500 card. My relevant
xorg.conf sections:

xscreensaver behaves normally, and blanking/fading out the screen takes
just a second or two.
