I installed the previous version of network-manager and the applet does
not crash anymore, but neither will it show me any available wifi
networks. It works using a USB tethered connection to my Android.

The previous version was found in /var/cache/apt/archives/

~$ sudo dpkg -i network-manager_0.9.2.0+git201202161854.8572ecf-
0ubuntu6_i386.deb
