Nope, spoke too soon, came back. However, I'm able to duplicate the error. It always happens when I highlight text in Chrome, which freezes GNOME. I can only interact with the top menus, such as right-click, but I can't minimize/maximize/close any windows. Tabs with music playing in the background (Pandora, YouTube) continue playing.
It's very annoying but not turning my computer into a brick.
