Public bug reported: Usually I'm a command line user, but today I decided to give the software center in my newly installed ubuntu a chance. Selected wireshark from the list and started installation. The progress tab showed a nice progress bar next to it, which completed to about 85% or so, and then remained there for a couple of minutes. It looked to me as though the process was hung for some reason, but as I couldn't get the output from the installation, I couldn't make a decision as to what was going on. Several minutes later, with the progress bar still stuck at the same point, I lost patience. Pstree told me that aptd was running dpkg was running frontend. Frontend sounds a lot like something designed for user interaction, although I'm not sure. I killed frontend. The install continued a bit, then hung again. This time I found and killed another instance of frontend with little waiting.
After killing that second frontend process, software-center informed me that the install had failed, and finally presented the output as details. It did so in a text box which was about two rows high, inside a dialog box which I could not resize. The only reasonable way to actually read the text was copy it to some other application. The German umlauts got lost somewhere along the way. Here is thetail end of the log: Unpacking wireshark-common (from .../wireshark-common_1.6.2-1_amd64.deb) ... "Beendet" means "terminated" and is probably the translation of SIGTERM. Hope this is of some use. After the failed install via software center, I installed the package via command line without any incident. So I'd say it's not a bug in the wireshark package but in the way software-center interacts with it. Might be wrong there, though.
