After two years of inactivity it looks like the inital idea is too complicated (or there is no much need for this), so I would suggest that the update-manager only change the color (may be to orange) and the available menuitems of the indicator-applet if unsupplied updates are persent. As the update-manager does this already in the case that the system has to be restarted after an update maybe this is more easy?
