Their is a hint in one web resource for another distro's that it may be occurring because of a missing path for user authentication/resources. The problem occurs while running as root and trying to locate user/user resources. See /var/auth.log below. Package reconfig makes no difference. You can see below the before and after changing /etc/X11/default-display-manager. kdm does not complete the "open session" for user and aborts with 'user not found' message.
