Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic
During the latest security upgrade in Feisty, the upgrade of the package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic failed during its configuration phase: Setting up linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic (2.6.20.5-16.28) ... Segmentation fault (core dumped) dpkg: error processing linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-restricted-modules-generic: linux-restricted-modules-generic depends on linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic; however: Package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing linux-restricted-modules-generic (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-generic: linux-generic depends on linux-restricted-modules-generic; however: Package linux-restricted-modules-generic is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing linux-generic (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic linux-generic E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I've narrowed the segfault down to the postinst script which calls: depmod -a -q -F /boot/System.map-2.6.20-16-generic 2.6.20-16-generic And, indeed, running that command in the terminal causes depmod to segfault. Just running "depmod -a" works fine though. The result of this upgrade failure is that the system won't start the next reboot since the kernel won't boot. Grub was already updated and the only way to boot is to hit ESC after the bios and select the older kernel. ** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Upgrade of linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic failed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117782 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
