The same thing happen to me when Kubuntu upgraded from 2.6.20-15 to 2.6.20-16. I discovered what the problem was - it seems that a new version of the ipw3945d-* executable was not installed in /sbin during the kernel upgrade. The new kernel was looking for ipw3945d-2.6.20-16-generic but only ipw3945d-2.6.20-15-generic was available. When I added a soft link - ln -s ipw3945d-2.6.20-16-generic ipw3945d.2.6.20-15-generic The wireless started working again.
