I suspect we are talking at cross purposes.  I managed to get back to 
"normal" by Right Clicking on the bottom panel then clicking on "Add to 
Panel" and then adding the "Window Selector".
I did try the Desktop Effects but turned it off again.
This email conversation is a great PR exercise and a great help to new 
Linux users who are sometimes struggling.
