I saw this as well when I was testing from home; but now that I'm
testing it from my office I can't reproduce it, nor can I reproduce it
from a 3G dongle. My test from home was probably being blocked by my
firewall :)
The best I can offer with the errors I see in syslog, is to reboot if
you've only just installed the plugin (though that should not be
necessary since at least Oneiric), and to verify that you can indeed
reach the VPN gateway.

If none of this works // everything is verified; then we'll need further
information such as packet capture and debug logs from the pptp service,
which you can get by following the steps here:
http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/Debugging (look at the very end of
the page for the pptp debugging details).
