I too seem to have this bug... almost exactly. I installed 11.10 from scratch. I immediately got rid of UNITY and installed the new GNOME then went back to GNOME CLASSIC.
Everything worked fine and then one day, I think after a system update, my mouse pointer just started becoming invisible. sometimes, when it first started happening, it would be visible at the login screen but not after. now it is either visible when the system starts up or it is not... however... This time my pointer has not become visible even after several reboots so I started Firefox and... what light in yonder window breaks? My mouse pointer! But the pointer is visible ONLY WITHIN FIREFOX! any move outside the firefox window or above the firefox menubar and the pointer becomes invisible. (so, to be clear, the mouse will not be visible on the title bar of the firefox window either) I tried opening a few other applications just now to see if the mouse became visible in any other application windows and have found that it is; Visible: VLC, LibreOffice Invisible: Any part of the Ubuntu Desktop, SUDOKU, Majhongg, Mines, Movie Player, Terminator lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600] So... yeah.
