@fig_wright - Not suggesting it as a fix method. Just stating that just installing gnome-shell after a regular install of Ubuntu and all is stable. I have not had a freeze since purging the ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3. The instability only comes when the ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 is added. So all I am suggesting is that an updated package/dependency in the PPA is causing a regression or instability at least.
