Sorry for the delay.

I had to reboot a few days ago, and the problem appears to have resolved
itself.  This bugs me, because the problem occurred initially after a
reboot, and no upgrades were applied between the reboots.

One message that I forgot to include was the kernel complaining about
the rtc losing interrupts at 2048 Hz.  This appeared to be related to
VMware, and I've since modified the VMWare configuration so that the
warning went away.  This is the one change between the reboots mentioned
above.

If I can reproduce the problem, I'll amend the ticket (or open a new one
if this one closes in the meantime).
