So, maybe this is summing up the obvious but:

There seems to be two different bugs that produce the same symptoms.
The patched kernel above fixes the bug for SiS chipsets and should
somehow be moved into the main Ubuntu tree.  There is a separate bug for
VIA chipsets that may be related to the acpi subsystem and seems to be
correctable in some cases with the kernel line acpi=off but which is not
solved by the above kernel. So:

1 - Is there anybody with an SiS chipset for whom the above kernel does not fix 
this problem?
2 - Anyone have any ideas how to address the VIA bug?
3 - How do we get the patch into the ubuntu tree so at least those with SiS 
chipsets can move on?
