I've been using this as a proximity command instead:
  dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=org.gnome.ScreenSaver 
/org/gnome/ScreenSaver org.gnome.ScreenSaver.SimulateUserActivity

I'm not sure whether numerigraphe's suggestion to simply use the '-d'
option has the same effect.
