Just experienced the same problem on another one of my systems while
installing 11.04. It was previously running 11.10 as well, similar to
the system I referenced in my original bug report.

It may be a coincidence, but in every case where it's crashed I've
selected "no" when prompted about copying my user profile from my
existing 11.10 install. If I don't import my existing user, it crashes;
if I do import my existing user, it succeeds.

The only way I've found to prevent it from crashing when I don't want to
import my user is to format the drive prior to running the installer,
rather than letting the installer format it.
