FYI, exactly the same this error appeared for me because of failing hardware! Linux just recognized it earlier than Windows XP. In my case it was an USB CF card reader which was operational in just 25% of the time after upgrading from Edgy to Feisty. But after a while Windows XP showed a similar behaviour.
Maybe Linux is more sensitive to failing hardware here (let it the board or the USB devices).
