A little more on this being nvidia-specifc: My machine with Nvidia card and Nvidia's drivers has this bug. It doesn't happen under Unity 2-D. And not under the nouveau driver -- but that forces Unity 2-D, anyway.
A machine with a Radeon card and Xorg radeon driver, doesn't show the bug. All this is under Unity 5.4. I also tested downgrading to Unity 5.2.0-0ubuntu5, under the nvidia 295.20 drivers. That appeared to show the bug, too.
