Great work tracking down a fix for this bug! Tormod, can you adjust your changelog to describe the "why" of the patch? This will be handy for doing future Debian merges. In other words, the changelog should try to summarize what the patch fixes, rather than just saying that a patch was added. That way the merger has some idea of its purpose without having to read through this entire bug report. (For example, see the entries for 0.97-20ubuntu6 and 0.97-20ubuntu3, which give a short summary of what the patch is for). After that, I'd like to get cjwatson's ACK for this patch since I'm not a grub expert, but AFAICT, it looks fine. :)
