This bug still exists in Ubuntu 11.10 (LibreOffice 3.4.4) and I can reproduce it reliably with the authors original description.
My guess: It is a LibreOffice <-> GVFS/GIO integration bug but where should it be reported? Gnome? Ubuntu? LibreOffice?
