So does that mean that commit dabcbb1bae0f55378060b285062b20f6ec648c6a
introduced the change that led to the panics?

This is my first bisect experience, and I'd love to know how to set up git to 
be able to reproduce the steps you just took (without actually doing the 
compiles).    I guess that means knowing which commits you used to identify 
v3.1 and for v3.2-rc2.
